This is a humanistic photography book dedicated to the artisans, traditional craftsmen and cultural practitioners of Kelantan, Malaysia. Conceived and written by Ang Wui Chong, with photography by Eric Lee Chin Chuan, the book is the result of four years of field visits, interviews and documentary photography involving more than ten individuals who have devoted their lives to preserving traditional skills and cultural practices.
The book explores a diverse range of crafts and cultural traditions, including wood carving, traditional metal and brass craftsmanship, kite-making, match-related craftsmanship, shadow puppetry and traditional coffin. Through documentary photography and personal narratives, the book presents not only the artisans’ works, but also the lives, memories, challenges and values behind their hands and creations.
Each artisan featured in the book represents a unique relationship between skill, time and place. Their knowledge has often been shaped through years of practice, observation and experience, with some traditions passed down through generations. As society continues to develop and lifestyles change, many traditional crafts face challenges in finding successors and remaining relevant to younger generations. The stories documented in this book therefore serve as an important record of cultural knowledge that may otherwise gradually disappear.
Kelantan is widely recognised for its rich cultural heritage and distinctive artistic traditions. Its diverse communities, local environment and historical development have contributed to a unique cultural landscape.
Combining visual documentation with human-centred storytelling, the book captures the artisans in their workshops, homes and everyday working environments.
